Cohere Health is a mission-driven organization built to transform the prior authorization landscape.

A considerable part of Cohere’s rapid growth and continued success hinges on the output of the product team. Product managers use deep curiosity, critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills to solve problems.

As a fast-growing tech company in the healthcare space, Cohere is looking for talented members to join the product team. Check out available positions here.

Catch up with two team members, Sam Burian and Brenda Reginatto, to learn what it’s like to be on the product management team at Cohere Health.

Sam Burian is a Product Manager on the “Cod Squad” from Boston, MA.

What are some things you do during a regular day?

Sam: Every day, I’m working with our engineers and designers to find creative solutions to problems our users are facing.

One of the most exciting things about product management is seeing that whole process end-to-end and then trying to bridge the gap between the different parts of the process to deliver something lasting.

We always start with our users. We’ll do 1:1 research sessions and look at user data from our products to understand their key problems. That’s the more upstream part, where we identify the really big, meaty challenges we can strategize solving for those users to help them add value to their lives and work.

After we understand the problem, then it’s working with the team, the developers, the designers, and the end users to build that solution. There are so many steps to go from problem to solution, but we focus on gathering feedback and shipping iteratively so we can learn faster.

After we implement a solution, it’s important to measure the outcomes. How did we do meeting our initial goals? How are users experiencing the product change? What could we have done better to make a bigger impact?

Where do you fit into the Cohere ecosystem?

Sam: We have a squad-based model made of small teams of product managers, designers, and engineers that work together on a given experience or area of the product. I’m in the “Cod Squad.”

In the early days of Cohere, there was less structure, and a couple of teams working on different areas of the products started to group together. We came up with the name Cod Squad as a play on one of the projects we were working on at the time. Other teams thought it was funny and started making other punny names too. So now we have the Goat Squad (Greatest Of All Teams), the Data Masons, and the Intelligeese. (Keep reading to hear from Brenda Reginatto of the Intelligeese squad.)

We have fun with it. Nobody here takes themselves too seriously and there are definitely a lot of puns and bad jokes along the way. It’s one of the things I love about Cohere and it makes it fun to come to work every day.

Brenda Reginatto is an Associate Product Manager on the Intelligeese squad from Boston, MA.

How would you describe the product manager role?

Brenda: The product manager’s primary goal is understanding the problem. My role is to dig deep into the issue and understand its full scope: why it matters and to whom it matters. Then, I have to articulate my findings to align the rest of the team on why we should tackle this problem now, why it is important, and what we hope to achieve if we address it.

Why did you pick Cohere?

Brenda: This is my first product management role. I come from a clinical background, so it’s a different trajectory than other PMs. I started in clinical practice, shifted to UX research, and now to product management.

  1. I wanted to find a company tackling a real problem, and prior authorization is a huge pain. The problem was well known to me.
  2. The company needed to value people with clinical backgrounds. I knew that was something unique that I could bring to the table.
  3. It was important that the company have a strong product and design focus. When I talked to the Cohere team and looked at the product, I was confident that would be the case here.

Those were the three things that I was looking for and Cohere ticked all the boxes.

What would you tell someone interested in becoming a PM at Cohere?

Brenda: Cohere provides a wonderful environment for people who want to learn a lot and learn quickly.  It’s very supportive of people in the early stages of their careers. People are very forgiving if you don’t have an insurance or healthcare background.

People are willing to bring you along in the journey to get you up to speed and help you learn what you have to learn. It’s very complex. If you are up for the challenge and you want to learn a lot and learn fast, this is an excellent place for it.
