When Becker’s Healthcare released its 2022 “Top Places to Work in Healthcare,” I wasn’t surprised to see Cohere had made the list. This was our first year being nominated for the award and I was confident we’d be selected because of the team we’ve built over the last two years, and are continuing to build.

Among other factors, Cohere was recognized by Becker’s for our commitment to promoting diversity, employee engagement, and professional growth within the workplace. As part of the evaluation process, Becker’s reviewed Cohere’s mission, vision, and value statements, along with these criteria:

  • Offering benefits and opportunities for employees to build successful careers above and beyond the average healthcare company
  • Encouraging professional development
  • Promoting leadership from within
  • Striving for a work-life balance through wellness and personal benefits
  • Community impact through volunteerism and giving back

Our Employee Resource Groups

One of the key factors for which Cohere was recognized as one of Becker’s “Top Places to Work” list was our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B) in the workplace. Currently, we have four active employee resources groups (ERGs) and have an average participation of 80% in our ERG events. Our ERGs mission statements include:

  • Black at Cohere: A non-judgmental space to have conversations with others who experience the same life obstacles that are placed in front of them due to the color of their skin, race that they identify as, and the amount of melanin in their skin.
  • CoQueer: LGBTQ+ Support Group and Allies: A supportive and safe space to discuss issues confronting the queer community and educate non-queer colleagues.
  • Women at Cohere: Focused on empowering, strengthening, and uniting women of all backgrounds to feel connected while providing resources, mentorship opportunities, and growth for one another.
  • Young Professionals Network: Bringing emerging professionals together for connection, support, mentoring, and resources to focus on career development and learning.

Each of the ERGs are sponsored by a member of the senior leadership team to ensure the group’s feedback, concerns, and goals are heard and an adequate amount of resources are allocated to aid in fulfilling each group’s mission.

Employee engagement

Through our annual employee survey, we are focused on fostering a venue for two-way communication between our employees and senior leadership to better understand our employees’ views, attitudes, and perceptions of the company. We use the feedback to make data-driven decisions and identify potential issues impacting employee morale.

In our most recent survey, 88% of our employees participated, with 90% indicating they were “proud to work for Cohere.” Brian Leach, a Principal Product Designer, recently wrote about working at Cohere, “the commitment, energy, and creativity that everyone brings to improving patient care is what makes working at Cohere fun and rewarding. We’re working on super complex problems that can feel pretty daunting at times, but the people here bring so much passion to the work that you can’t help but be excited.”

There is a strong focus on professional development within Cohere’s culture.  As the company grows, so do our employees. We provide each department with a generous budget to access external training resources for their team members. We provide access to training on soft skills via the Culture Amp tool, which integrates seamlessly with our SMS tool (Slack) and reminds employees to take the next step in their training process, making education extremely easy to access and complete.

In addition, we strongly believe in promoting from within, so it’s not uncommon for managers to encourage team members to apply for open positions within other departments if their interest lies elsewhere within our organization.

Our benefits & perks

Since Cohere first launched in 2019, we have been committed to offering a competitive, comprehensive benefits package to our team members which helps us stand out in the marketplace.

Effective on the first day of employment, benefits are available to each employee and their eligible dependents, including medical insurance; dental and vision insurance coverage; life and disability insurance; eligibility for our matching 401(k) retirement savings program; parental leave; and free access to the Wellness Coach App. In addition, we sponsor 75% of the medical premiums for our employees and all eligible dependents. In addition, Cohere provides coverage and support to any employees who must travel out of state for medical services, if the procedure isn’t legal in their home state.

Our discount and benefits hub allows employees to take advantage of savings programs and deals on brands and products such as pet insurance, auto and home insurance, cell phone service, travel, entertainment tickets, and gym membership reimbursement.

With more than 475 employees working remotely in 47 states across the country and more than a dozen languages spoken by our employees, I’m proud to be part of such a diverse, passionate, and collaborative team that’s focused on making the healthcare journey better for everyone. I attribute our company’s success and growth to our employees.
